      I've found my ships keep starting as a box. I start by making two 'axis' reactors around the ship core, usually (so far, the Ragnarok is the exception, with the reactors in the legs and wings of the "dragon") and then filling out from there.

      I looked at the specs for the M50. Why not just drop the shields altogether? Instead, a couple more guns (because, that's all that could fit) would help that ship much more. With only 220 shields, if you get breathed on, you're toast anyhow.

      I second being able to activate or inactivate gravity by using logic circuits. For instance, a ship airlock, that when a player is in it, and both doors are closed, asserts gravity on all entities in the airlock.
