      I think the size of fighters is actually fine. If you look at a real life fighter up close, its a lot bigger than most people would think. And one would only expect a fighter that must contain all of the extra systems required to operate in space, along with things like shields, would be bigger...

      Its hard.... My experience is that to get better, you see a cool ship someone else made or from a movie/game/tv show, try to make something like it, and fail completely. But with every attempt, you learn things, and the next one gets better.
