You don't necessarily have to stop moving to turn: you could queue the turn in memory, and have the leg wait until it is slotted into the ground, then turn in addition to the original animation.       I had the mech warriors, that would walk a few steps using plex door trickery and then suddenly reset. If you look carefully at the GIFs I posted, you would see that the GIF seems to reset twice. Testing linked the problem to the two-axis turret I had mounted on top.
