      Apparently they found a way to build torpedos, maybe with some Borg tech. The Defiant is a dedicated warship with ablative armor, and originally built for fighting the Borg.

      Piercing reduces shield damage, basically the worst choice for alpha damage, better go with ion, as Jarraf said. Also, more reload time means more damage per hit. Beam/beam has 3 km range and triple damage/relaod, cannon/beam has 6 km range (if you can hit at that distance!), double projectile...

      Beams have their uses, especially against very small targets. And the default sector size might be increased in the future.

      Default range is half that of cannons. There are range increasing slaves, but they can be used with cannons as well. However, weapon ranges are defined relative to sector size. With default sector size unslaved beams have only 1 km range, which I'd describe as basically useless. On servers with...

      I suggest you make a 3km long brick of reactors and thrusters in creative mode and check your framerate when moving it around. If you want to actually use it on a multiplayer server, you should ask an admin for permission beforehand.
