      Another option instead of ellipsoid is capsule shields. Capsules are often used in 3d systems like hit detection because they can generally approximate 3d shapes with minimal waste. These will tend to contain ship shapes better because they won't excessively tapper at their extremities.

      The most discussed change to propulsions model is removing cubic propulsion. Right now, you can accelerate much faster by strafing up and left and going forward than you can just going forward; so, I believe there are plans to average out acceleration when multiple vectors are at play.
