Since missiles don't consume ammo and consume energy, they are some kind of compressed energy. Which is why I don't think they should be called missiles. I mean a fighter I made feels strange knowing that it's only armement is missiles. I think of things like rockets when I hear the word missile.

    Definition of missile in google:
A weapon that is self-propelled or directed by remote control, carrying conventional or nuclear explosive

But the missiles in starmade are like plasma or photons being shot at high speeds.

    So could be called:
    - torpedo
    - plasma accelerator
    - energy bolt
    - heavy cannon
    etc etc etc,

So you want to change the easy, understandable missile for things like plasma accelerator?!
first of all thats time waste the dev team has more important things to do
second of all torpedos are also ammo consume (or well they are ammo) and torpedos are not fired with tubes like missiles are.
I think this game is a sci-fi where you dont need the nerd knowledge like you need in other games
changing simple things like missile to plasma accelerator would make the game harder to understand, and you will need sci-fi nerd knowledge
what would be the next thing? calling cannons as plasma bullets? i don't know what the name would be as i have no nerd knowledge.
what about white hull? call that transparant armour? missile computer wouldn't be right either lets call it plasma accelerator control panel (to make it easy) this would only lead to confusion. yes it does give an extra sci-fi piece but do we really want to?

I like your way of thinking with realistic standards but at this moment I think "missile" is the best word for them, if you look at their behavior....
I suggest to call them drones.
They fly on their own and are mostly based on energy

Starmade takes place in a very futuristic environment. :) Who says in the future we won't just call them missiles anyway instead of coming up with a new name? Just 'cause our modern day definition of a missile indicates a physical component doesn't necessarily mean a futuristic definition would as well.

It was just an example, what I prefer torpedo.

well there are some people who just call them what they want like myself i call the missiles on the ships i use either photon torpedoes orange colours or quantum torpedoes blue coloured so it is not necessary to change the name people can just call them what they want and to most people who do not have a fancy they might just call them missiles so no point except a waste of development time

is there a way so that i could change it so that the name actually changes in game (for servers as well)

Lore is the property of each individual shipwright. Starmade just provides the tools. I don't think that any weapon should have an official name, beyond a bare minimum of description, missile, cannon, beam, pulse. Leave what to call things to the people designing the ships.

This is not some kind of D&D game, its StarMade. StarMade is a game, and as any other game should have its own unique names and mechanics. It has to have some flesh or so to say lore on the bones, because otherwise for people such as myself who can't be bothered to make it up, it will feel like they are playing a very dry game. But I see what you mean by renaming stuff. Alternatively you could have it so that you rename a weapon for an individual blueprint, much like minecraft has the ability to name swords and other items with anvils. So in my ghostfighter, my missiles are called ghost-torpedos, or something like that.

I appreciate the realism objection to the name versus the in game mechanics, but short of not having a limited "supply" these weapons serve the functionality as expected for missiles, and as many of the names are chosen to be descriptive in behavior yet vague in actual explanation (so that you may assign whatever personal scifi/meta to them.)

Servers can change it in their block config, this should apply to the clients playing on that server (fairly certain i remember schema making that a propagation that happened automatically per server you play on)

If you have a server you can rename blocks to whatever you want. I am sure if there was a Star Trek server things would be renamed to phasers and torpedos and such.

Yes Calibri it propagates to the clients. Upon connection to the server the config files are cached on the clients in a way. It is a solid system and I am glad Starmade uses that method even if it does hand the client a 'copy' of the server which can lead to build stealing. Not a huge issue because you can steal the blueprint of a server, but you can't steal community, admins, and other stuff that makes a server.

aceface - One way to look at the word missile is that it at one time applied to sling stones, rocks, throwing weapons, arrows and such. It almost literally means "thrown object with intent", granted the origin of the word is two mashed together words much how English today invents words on the fly. The meaning of thrown can change to, since it was applied to arrows as well as rocks you find on the ground.

In modern times the difference between missiles and rockets is typically guidance. Missiles assume some form of sophistication while rockets are typically about as sophisticated as a bottle rocket.

I do think the idea of naming weapon groups would be cool, but it would only be useful if you could target specific center of systems on a ship. A system that gave blob targeting would be useful for that. Blob targetting would essentially xray a ship and show ovals of a system. Not block by block definition but you would see clusters of things like weapons, power systems and more. That would bring a host of issues but would make an excellent suggestion if someone feels they want the credit. If not when I am done with my homework I will post something up and see what people think.

Aside from the default block texture looking like a tube I'd say the way it works is on par with what it's called. This is like arguing infinite ammo shouldn't be called ammo because you don't have to reload.
