Should I play if I do singleplayer? (AKA if the pve is worth?)

Content is actually created by you. SM is a sandbox. That means it has game rules designed to offer you a frame in which YOU paint. Said rules vary wildly from version to version so unless you want to play multiplayer, I suggest you start with an older version, something that doesn't start with 2. That is because between last 1.9 version and 2 game got huge changes that are not over yet, so in the latest version not everything fits. Some parts of the game are new and shiny but other parts are obsolete and are still in game, waiting to be changed and fit in.

Before 2.something versions there were no catastrophic sudden changes and features and balance changes were introduced one by one and the game is definitely more coherent.

Of course, game has a few content even if you don't create it, but that is just to let you get a feel of what you want to make. Default Pirates are dangerous only for the unarmed beginners, default station models are few and get boringly repetitive fast, pirate stations will scare you hard but are actually weaker than most players' ships in damage per second, shields and shield regeneration and so on.

Of course, it is up to you, the player, to create or download ships and stations and make them available to your game to use instead of defaults and then improve your self to build things that can win against your own creations that you gave to your pirates to use.

Crafting is easy and obvious in 1.9 versions, to get resources you can mine planets and asteroids or hunt pirates or buy from game's shops and resell to other shops for up to 20% profit or claim pirate and trader stations using their built-in faction modules then take and sell the blocks they are made of... This game is a sandbox, you are free to be who you want to be, do what you want to do. You can make your map a Star Wars entire universe or you can just be one of the pirates killing and looting the game's honest traders.

If you don't like building what you use with your own hands and the help of a very good embedded build-helper, then I am afraid you either need to join a server others built either choose another game.

I more or less agree with Agame3 , except that I probably wouldn't invest time in the older versions if you aren't already familiar with them, and/or you don't have any nostalgia for them.

If you are actually wanting/expecting to have a meaningful single player experience, then I would strongly suggest that you wait until after the universe update, when, hopefully, the in-game assets, planets, resource distribution, stellar phenomena, AI, Fleets, etc are all reworked to, again hopefully, blend together and weave StarMade's patchwork quilt into a beautiful tapestry. This, of course, could mean waiting for quite a while (years?) but there are plenty of other games out there to fill the time.

Currently, you can get a lot of enjoyment out of StarMade if you treat it like a LEGO® Technic building set and use your imagination.

Also depends a bit on how new you are. I very much enjoyed the game for a couple of months in solo play when I first downloaded before even trying out multiplayer. While it is true that many players have can wipe out a pirate base and its entire fleet unscathed, there was something fun about not knowing anything. It can be fun spending an afternoon mining out a single asteroid to build a tiny little base inside of it, or running factories so small you have to let them churn out blocks while you build your itty bitty little fighter that may or may not be able to take on a Xanith or two.

The hard part is that even the biggest and strongest default ships in the game are not even good enough for most people to use as fighter drones; so, as you get better, the challenge of single player falls off fast.

I would say definitely maybe. I would further clarify by saying that the Logic subsystem alone can provide dozens of hours of exploration and enjoyment, to create various machines and blinking light layouts. Even if you just re-create something that someone else has already mastered, it still feels good to make a logic build work and see it move and interact.

If you want to shoot things in single player, which is likely from your use of the term "PvE", there are other games that do it better (I have found that the Avorion demo is fun and satisfying for shooting things), but if you want to build in a Scifi environment, this is the game for you.

The one thing I'd comment on that hasn't been said, is that there really isn't anything that you can do in singleplayer that you can't do on a multiplayer server too AND be able to show off your hard work.

However, I've found it a lot easier to keep a SP Creative world for designing ships/turrets/etc and creating blueprints, and then using those on a MP server once at least most of the design work is done, so you literally get the best of both worlds...

Last I checked (quite a while ago) out-of-the-box enemies were still invincible in power 2.0

However doing so requires you to already understand the game well enough to where you probably won't get much out of pve.
Invincible, but ineffectual. Even given new ships ten times bigger, they're not very good with most weapons, and mostly serve to annoy with swarming behavior if you scratch the paint on their pitiful stations (which are pretty much all shield; their weapons are pea shooters from the old turret system).

The PvE content is barely okay to test weapons; it isn't exactly fun, and never has been.

Yeah, I attacked an enemy base with 1k p2w3 ship last night, and basically had to shoot things until they were not things anymore... The enemies definitely need a refit. With dev weapons near completion, perhaps this would be a good time for people to start designing EvP ships for the dock.
