    Hello,

A few of my friends were playing so I thought I'd give the free alpha demo a whirl before purchasing. Unfortunately, the game loads into the main menu fine but then hangs. It doesn't matter whether I click Local, Online or Options, the appropriate window appears and then nothing. If I click, I get the usual Java not responding. I have already tried removing and then reinstalling Java in case that helped but Starmade seems to be using the JRE that came with it in the /dep folder.

PC Specs - i7-6700, 16GB RAM, nVidia Titan XP

Log files attached, any help would be appreciated.

Additionally, I tried deleting the game and installing it fresh on another drive. Same problem

The last line of your log before it crashes is this:

[2018-04-10 17:34:10] [JOYSTICK] cannot read default joystick file because it does not exist

[EDIT] Ran this error by one of the devs, and he said you should runt the repair files function in the launcher.

If that does not work, you can check in the settings.cfg file for the line C_SELECTED_JOYSTICK and make it equal 0.

If that does not work try deleting your settings.cfg

Do you have an actual joystick attached to the computer?
(If yes, try to unplug it, there may be an incompatibility with java or a broken driver installed)

You could also try to delete your settings.cfg in your starmade directory, to make sure it does not have a selected joystick in the settings.

If all fails, try to unplug other external hardware, for example, ambient lights or alike, that are known to cause issues with java and game libraries.

No joystick or gamepad installed. Only keyboard + mouse. Admittedly they do have RGB lights (both made by Roccat) but this has never been an issue with any other Java applications. When I first tried an older version of Starmade years ago, I had an illuminated keyboard + mouse of a different brand (Logitech) and didn't encounter any problems. No other weird input devices installed either (like LeapMotion, VR, Wii or PS4 controller)

Built-in to the mouse and keyboard, they are usually no problem.
Mostly ambient lights cause issues, as they somehow seem to fiddle around with the input side and output side.

The game did now stop at a completely different point.
Did you check for secondary windows? or popups from your OS asking if starmade is allowed to access the internet or alike?

Seeing your Playername change, you may have been in the Online servers list, or browsing your local worlds.
But you did not try to join it, right?

Could you try to create a new world?

No other popups & Java is already allowed through firewall

If I click on multiplayer, the log file shows that it has retrieved a list of servers but it freezes before displaying them, so can't join one.

Click Local, window opens, game freezes. :(

    Minor bump with additional info.

Firstly, I saw this thread and I wondered if our problems have anything in common.

So I re-downloaded everything again, launched the game and gave it another go. When I clicked on Local, I noticed that the game did not freeze immediately. My cursor happened to drift over Online on the menu and it highlighted, as soon as my cursor hit the window for the local game options, then it crashed.

So I think it is something graphical that is causing this issue.

This should be another case where Nvidia broke their drivers then.
That specific spot in the menu has not been changed for quite a while.

A theory could be, as it was a thing for some OSX machines:
Are you possibly passing over the "Continue last game" button while moving over to the window?
Broken drivers in the past, usually had issues with the mouse-over thing.

It happens with any window at all that opens after clicking on a main menu option.

I'll wait for nVidia's next driver iteration then and hope they clean up any OpenGL bugs.

However, if anyone has any more insights, please feel free to chip in.

I will add that both Minecraft and Spiral Knights work perfectly and they utilise both Java & OpenGL.
