A couple of photos may illustrate my point better than a long winded rant.....

First, a screenshot from ingame. I have to wonder....am I missing something or is a solid block of any system now the only choice? Please view the shield rechargers and then take note of the integrity.

Next, a screenshot of my recent conversation with another long term Starmade fan (his words are in orange) who recently returned to Starmade:

He doesn't post here on the forums, but here is an unfiltered snapshot of how this update is being received.

why Schine decided to push the update despite the overwhelming community backlash is beyond me.
We all said it was shit, and I guess this proves our point.

It's made the game unplayable. You either build a normal ship that barely functions or build a tube boi that effectively abuses the power to such a degree it can power 1 shot everything guns on an 8k drone.

    It's a complete failure.

A simple mining ship with a few chambers for FTL and a system of 5 wide by 20 tall by 20 deep salvager modules controlled by two computers.....reactor maxed to the point it goes unstable every time the salvagers fire....salvager distance?

    155 meters away. An 11 x 11 x 5 reactor, barely able to push a 5 x 20 x 20 array, and requiring 600 stabilizers 155 meters away. My associate had it right.

    A disgrace.

If you look at the purple/pink button top left of the build menu it actually shows you how it's calculated so you can work out just how broken it is for yourself. ;P
Short answer; A cube is by far the most efficient shape to use.
Also, due to the square-cube law, the bigger the cube the proportionally more integrity it has. This of course encourages gigantisim and the whole game will devolve into who has the biggest cubes before the server melts... /facepalm.
On top of that, as you mentioned, a huge cube at either end of your ship is aesthetically SHIT! Fuck this 'update.' It's a de-evolution of Starmade on almost every measurable metric. It's taking my definition of broken, not just to another level but to a whole nother dimension. Twilight (edit: zone) level of insanity.

I remember when I started playing about 4 years ago. Everything was balanced WAAAY differently compared to the last release, to the point that my original ships couldn't function at all. The new mechanics will undoubtedly see the same level of refinement.

I know it's a lot like polishing a turd, and I still REALLY hate stabilizers, but I shall remain open. My initial cost of investment was only $3 anyway...

"no worries, we gonna tweak stab distance and integrity to be more permissive for the final release"

    well good job there.

Right? Tweaking a broken system doesn't make it suddenly perfect. It can become bearable, even tolerable, but I seriously doubt I will ever enjoy "mandatory space wasting blocks"

Edit; wait, I haven't been able to try it, I'm in the middle of replacing a fried hard drive.

Did they actually make it MORE restrictive??

The main part of your system blocks now needs to be in a cuboidal arrangement. It doesn't have to be an actual cube.

Wether or not that limits building? Yeah I think so...

Question: How is the integrity if I make a 45 degree turned cube?
    Code:
    I mean from this:
    ##
    ##
    To this:
     #
    # #
     #
Just with way more blocks (lets say 10x10x10=1000) and ofcourse with a 3d-cube arrangement and not with a square. :)

The integrity would be bad. It works off open faces, and in your arrangement all the side blocks will have at least 2 open faces. Compare this with a cube, where the only blocks that have 2 or more are the very edge blocks.

Yeah I just tried it quickly, and it doesn't work. I think the integrity should allow rotated cubical arrangements of block clusters.

It's not great how it's now, but it doesn't bother me too much tbh...

I played with it all day and night throughout the weekend, and finally I may be forced to admit.....that you are 100% correct. It is nearly unplayable. I would shy away from stating it is a complete failure, as there are a few features that I believe are interesting, but as long as they remain tied to the new integrity, shield, and stabilizer mechanics....they may as well be a jelly bean sitting on a turd.

What I find the most difficult to believe is that the developers were unaware of the obvious consequences of these changes. How could they not be aware that the stabilizer distance, especially in its extreme current state, would result in extraordinarily long ships? I attempted to create a medium sized simple mining barge and ended up with a chunk of stabilizers floating in space, attached by a throbbing purple penis vein, 300 meters away. How is that acceptable? As you mentioned, every system must now be a cube, and preferably a large cube, or it is penalized? How could they not be aware that this would devolve into systems all being created as boxes on top of boxes. Is this creative? The "dream" they had for Starmade? "Insanity" is correct....their offering, in conjunction with what they've stated their goals were, is completely Orwellian.

I've been around quite a long time now and remember many of the largest changes. Many, if not most, of them had teething pains and had to be reshaped and/or adjusted over time. Yet they were functional. The underlying ideas behind the changes were sound. This is not the case with the current update. A square wheel cannot be polished into acceptability. The premise itself is flawed.

Were the stated goal of the developers this: "We wish for the players to create only a single shape of ship, filled with systems that are also a single shape, and would like them to make this ship as large as possible!" ..... well, I guess the update is a raging success.

Nonsense! I can now build squares OR rectangles!!!! That is TWO choices, I'll have you know!

Spheres irl are far more structurally sound than cubes are. Maybe round things could be easier to work with?

An excellent idea! But, lest we deviate from the newest vision from Shine, let us propose that ALL ship and systems within the ship from here on be SPHERES! That is WAY more creative than having all ships and systems in the ships be squares or rectangles! Because....well....circles!! =)

Using Circles in a block based game is heresy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shame! Shame!

This idea pleases me. This Death Star will be the Ultimate Power In The Universe.
