Hey guys, I'm planning on getting a new gaming desktop PC, and I'm wondering how will a GTX 1060 handle this game :P

Will I get at least 100 FPS when loading in planets? Titans? Large battleships?

    I will be having... about...

    i7-6700k or i7-6500k

    16 GB RAM

    128 GB SSD + 1 TB 7200 rpm HDD

    Possible GTX 1060 3 or 6 GB

I'm probably going to go with 6 GB one, but we'll see.

My budget is about $1000, so if anyone can do better, let me know. That'll be great! :)

Things I plan on doing: Videos, lot of renderings and editing, LOT of gaming (obviously), and... yeah having fun basically. I don't need 4K. Don't wish to spend more money to get 4K screens :P

From someone who has a GTX 960, my average FPS is about 350-500 FPS. When I stare at the big stuff it drops to about 125 FPS for me (ie planets at r250 or >800m ships). So I think yer rig should work out fine.

an I7 is not worth the price if you can manage to buy an I5-6600k with a gtx 1070 it will be more a bang for the bucks ^^

Why would anyone want 100fps. 60 is the max for your brain, higher frequences will not look to be different.

My goal is the be futureproof at most with a budget. Who knows. 100 FPS for a game this year. Later in 4 years this or maybe a new game it'll be 45 FPS or something.

I'm not only thinking about buying GTX 1060 for this game only. But also others. But I was just curious to see how good this card will be, in case if I bring up large projects and videos. ;)

Unless you're using a 60Hz monitor, this is incorrect :) There are a lot of myths out there about the eyes or the brain only being able to interpret 30, 40, 60 and so on frames per second. There are of course diminishing returns at some point, as far as I'm aware, there's no consensus on what the cap is for a limit.

The 1/220th of second flash test is commonly referenced in arguments about this:

The USAF, in testing their pilots for visual response time, used a simple test to see if the pilots could distinguish small changes in light. In their experiment, a picture of an aircraft was flashed on a screen in a dark room at 1/220th of a second. Pilots were consistently able to "see" the afterimage as well as identify the aircraft. This simple and specific situation not only proves the ability to perceive 1 image within 1/220 of a second, but the ability to interpret higher FPS.
I'm not sure where the 1/220th of a second source is, so I'm hesitant to rely on it.

I have 60 Hz, 120 Hz and 144 Hz monitors in my home. I can easily tell the difference between a 60 and 120 Hz monitor. If concentrating, I can also tell slight differences between 120 Hz and 144 Hz, although, these small differences could be imagined.

As for the OP, should probably be using Pick Parts, Build Your PC, Compare and Share - PCPartPicker

I think the USAF test above just proofs screen/retina burn, flash of light in a dark room, your gonna see that glow.

" as well as identify the aircraft."

If they only saw flash or a glow of light, they wouldn't have been able to identify the aircraft ;)

For building it'll be fine. For combat I highly recommend you get a really high resolution screen. On any server that upped sector size without reducing weapon range(every server ever) you're not going to hit anything at range unless your resolution is redonk.

For people on a budget, going to a higher resolution screen is likely to be a HUGE mistake. It takes literally twice the graphics card power to get the same frame rate on a 1440 screen as it does on a 1080 screen and four times the graphics card power to get the same performance on a 4K screen. The cost is not just the screen, but the far higher cost of putting enough graphics power into your machine. Competitive gaming frame rates on a 4K screen takes two water cooled 1080s.

The OP stated they have a budget of $1000. IMO a 1060 is a great choice while staying with a 1080P screen. I use a 1080P screen myself (with a GeForce 970, roughly equivalent) and haven't had the slightest hint of regret for the year so far that I've owned it.

I request a testing video from the OP with specific videocard info, looking at a huge ship or two (2 km long each, not less then 20 billion blocks each) with not limited FPS. This would make a perfect test!

Also, take a usual standard i5, if you didn't chose the CPU yet, don't spend money on K versions, not really worth it. If it were 2002 and you thought about a Celeron, then it would.
Also you may save a couple bucks selecting a non covered DDR units, those shiny colourful things don't change anything, except for adding value.

Will be getting a new computer in a couple weeks (around black-friday) ;)

I guess I could do a random SM test, throwing all sort of ships on the screen, seeing how it can handle.

Above 60FPS, FPS differences can be noticed in precise response time, but yes, the effect is subtle and not everyone can notice it.

Yup, I got a 1060, if you have not brought the GPU already my personal recommendation is to save up a little bit more money and get the 1070, its worth the wait and saving the money.

As for FPS, I did a few tests with FPS limiting turned off, maximum render distance + 3 Intruder Class Battlecruisers (approx 120k mass each) was running at about 100-160 FPS according to StarMade's FPS counter, although I could I be wrong, I think this game is more relying on your CPU rather than your GPU, I have an top ranked i5 but Gonzalo has an i7 and gets much more FPS then me, but then again he also has a 1080.

    quad digit 1337 fps :)
    Very useful info :D

I'm going to try to squeeze in the 1070, hoping that there's a good sale haha. Thanks for the info guys, maybe later I should do some sort of benchmark report. :p

About FOUR WEEKS TO GO then I get a new PC that can actually play games \o/

    *Bump*

Getting a rig with GTX 1060, i7-6700k, 16 GB RAM, 120 GB SDD, and a TB or two of HDD? Something like that. Will keep you guys updated, and will run a benchmark test real soon ^^
