Asteroids spawn in different abundances at different radii from the central star. That is to say closer to the star you will find more black asteroids. Farthest from the star you find blue asteroids. In the middle you find everything inbetween. The reason there are so few blue asteroids is that the larges orbital ring does not reach the radii for blue asteroids and you are forced to search void sectors.

this should be re-evaluated @schema. The radial dependence is cool, but it should be shortened just a bit such that blue asteroids can be found in the outermost ring.

I have tried looking in asteroid sectors at the very edge of systems. How far from the sun do they start to spawn? Do I need to check only asteroid sectors in the very corner of their system?

Would someone be able to provide a screenshot of a blue asteroid?

I've really only found blue asteroids in the corners of star systems. Try searching 3x3x3 sector blocks at in the 8 corners of a star system for blue asteroids. Unfortunately I've had a hard time finding rings that go out that far so you'll be searching void sectors.

Well I went looking for Asteroids in single player by constantly admin teleporting. I was able to find 3 sectors with blue asteroids. 2 of them were exactly 9 sectors away for their sun and one was ~8.3 away. Now the tricky part is trying to find one in multiplayer where I don't have admin privileges and sectors are 8km across rather than 2km.

No matter what the present concept is, it has to be changed. Seeming dependancy on range is cool and all, but it creates a huge imbalance of resources in game. Lack of larimar asteroids resulted in me changing primary color for my ship's plating to green, and I wont even mention shortage of ores and crystals within those two rare types (though Chabaz asteroids are also uncommon). Tect asteroids are in turn are common like sand in a desert, while wieldind the most ratio of useless waste material (lava).

It seems a much better idea to tie asteroid types randomly or depending on a star type, so that only 4 out of 8 would populate any given system. Relation to a star type can make a whole production more exciting and promote trade and faction possesion, though it also can result in factions hoarding systems, which is hard to liberate considering free, invulnerable home bases. This would not neglect an ability to mine in those sectors.

On a side note I still wonder why asteroids are specifically spawned in a small central fraction of a sector. I can see how jump-in corners has to be kept free for incoming ships, but density of spawn area makes it to look too artificial.

I hope development team will eventually take a look in these points.

I've been playing SM on a new server and trying to pull myself up by my bootstraps. I gotta tell ya, there's nearly no blue asteroids to be found. And I haven't seen a white asteroid since the new faction system came out, on any server, period.

This isn't going to work. Shields and cannons are harder to make than jump drives and warp gates because of this scarcity.

Maybe someone needs to enlist the aid of a statistician to help the devs get a better handle on how distribution algorithms work? Because it's really hard for me to understand how they couldn't see this problem ahead of time.

From what I've heard, larimar belts are big enough to clip outside of the system, at which point they just don't spawn (due to the clipping). I'll try teleporting around on my single player to see if I can find any (haven't seen a single one yet).

This is exactly what I was talking about. They are too rare. I found one single laminar asteroid somewhere between galaxys. And they are so damn important.

I can confirm that blue asteroids exist, but are far too rare.

It's a bug, the radius of blue asteroid belts should have never been that big in the first place. I honestly don't know why it wasn't fixed yet, considering how critical and economy fraking this is...

    Another question occurs:

If they fix this bug, will established universes need to be reset in order to actually see the change?

    Edit-

    Ladies and Gentleman,

Since it seems no one has posted this issue on the bug tracker, I took that liberty. It is bug#1358 and can be found at the link below.

I too have been hunting blue asteroids for some time. The only reason I know they are in game is I by chance happened to see some in a void sector on a private server. However I have yet to encounter one on the server I play on :( I do agree the distance thing is interesting and until I read it here I was unaware of it. Still while I like it it wouldn't hurt to tweak it to be a little more reasonable!

Personally, I think a server should be able to set asteroid/resource/planet distribution and scarcity. The way it is set up now, I actually quite like it. When you think about it for a few seconds, why would every system have all the elements? We're finding out in astrophysics that different systems and planets and stars vary wildly from what we find in our own. This has had the effect on my server (with no npc shops at present) of forcing people to trade between factions for materials in the right amounts. Since a faction claiming a system with the rare ones has a near monopoly until another faction finds their own system.

Have to go, might expand on this idea later.

I'm almost sure distribution of asteroids is a random event.
At the moment I'm hunting for Dolom that seems nowhere to be found. ;)

    Greets,

    Jan
according to my friend, they are not random. for larimar, look near ships
dolom is close to the sun

Well seeing that someone brought this up, and it might get attention as its on page 1 now I better put this here:

Issue has been fixed. You can find tons of them as long as you keep to the asteroid rings that are far out from the star.
