One of the most frustrating elements of the game for me is the ultra slow speed of one's dave when not in build mode. I find myself frequently having to move around my ship in astronaut mode so as to access turrets, etc.. Summoning in a ship's core each and every time I need to move this way is almost as tedious as is slowly floating. This is not a situation that pops up infrequently for me. It is an occasion that occurs literally hundreds of times each time I play (I use a lot of turrets and docked entities).

Moreover, because in build mode, we frequently hold down shift in order to accelerate ourselves, this becomes instinct. However outside of build mode, holding down shift does the opposite, it slows you down?!?! (WTF?) I am halfway certain that it was originally intended to speed you up, but that factor was added as a negative instead of a positive or something as a bug, and then never fixed. It makes absolutely no sense for the instinctive 'hold shift down' to do the opposite of what it does in build mode, to slow you down instead of speeding you up.

I suggest that this be fixed, that Dave have a jetpack (does not require any graphics) that allows him to move as if he were in a ship's core. Holding down left shift would activate this while in astronaut mode.

Well, it slows you down because thats what it did in Minecraft. Holding shift there put you into a crouch mode that let you walk a little ways over the edge of a block so that you could place another block next to it without falling (its how you made bridges).

Starmade basically copied that. Dunno if it keeps you from falling though, never tried as falling doesn't killing you in this game.

Kinda pointless to have in a mostly zero g environment.

Even planetside you could just build bridges in build mode, so why have a creep button?

I vote jet pack, much better to get around with and you can save those valuable cores for ship building.

It shouldn't take much to enable a "jetpack mode" on the astronaut in which he has all the flight and control characteristics of a core. Make it toggle by holding shift and pressing space.

doesn't stop falling at all. tried it when I was planetside on an ice planet........ had to have someone rescue me....

anyway, maybe not AS fast as build mode (because that is really fast and could have game breaking results....) but an increased speed while holding shift would be nice.

Even if it has a cooldown and/or required fuel. Not that I think it should have those, but for balance issues if the devs need it.

something that should've been added a long time ago. Not just a convenient way to get around it could help new players when they get their first ship destroyed by pirates. nothing says "screw this" quite like starting back at the advanced shop with absolutely nothing, no credits to buy another ship core, too far from any asteroid/credit generating means, and floating to the next sector would take like 20-30 mins.

I wouldn't mind jetpack depending on how it'd be done. For example, recalling an idea from the past thread regarding modular design of character's equipment:

    - Jetpack is basic propulsion system, necessary for spacewalk. Different modules could allow different speed, use of energy, responsiveness/class of stabilisers (one module could stop the player nearly instantly after letting the key go, other would decelerate very slowly) or even change a bit of dynamic of flight (continuous, smooth flight which could use up the energy rather quickly vs jetpack creating periodically bursts of push in the direction the user specifies).
If there'd be jetpack consuming much of spacesuit's energy or oxygen for burst of propulsion (I mean, should we ever have such), it could be pretty nice. In general though, I do like that the spacesuit is slow. It should be. A single player, I believe, shouldn't easily manage manually multiple turrets and facilities aboard a ship outside of build mode when they're being set up and adjusted. AI and in the future - crews (both NPC and player ones) should be a thing.

I believe there are already animations in the game for sprinting and the such. Eventually astronaut gameplay will be the focus of the dev teams efforts and we will see things like bitter movement, gameplay, new mechanics and new tools brought into the fold. Equipment such as armor and jetpacks are things we are looking into, although we are not entirely sure how we want to integrate them. We need a system that can be customized and offers balanced variety.

The thread I refer to in my post above in my own quote had quite some nice ideas regarding that (even if personally I am still ambivalent at best toward voxel equipment). Though when I search in general quite some threads pop up. So, no matter what you'll decide you should be set as far as ideas/suggestions themselves go.
