It started as an idea about landing gear.

So, I was thinking about landing gear, and how to build fighters with landing gear that wasn't horrible, and I had this idea of retractable landing gear that is actually pretty cool and has a lot more uses.
I would like to have a computer block similar to the weapons computers that could be assigned a number key in the flight interface, so you can use it while flying. This computer could be linked to any regular Hull blocks, angles and corners, just like weapons now. When activated it would vanish the blocks the same way doors work. This way you can create retractable landing gear.
There also happen to be a huge number of other cool things you could do with this.
You can make large fighter bay doors that match the style of your ship that can be operated while flying.
Security doors that can only be opened by the pilot.
You could build transformer ships that change shape based on which computers are activated. A ship that changes into a giant flying robot anyone?
You could make physical shield plates from reinforced hull that can be activated in combat for extra protection, a little surprise for the enemy.
You could make a demo version of your ship with sections of the hull that can be deactivated to show off the layout of the internal components.
Secret rooms that can only be reached if you have gained access to the core.
I'm sure people would come up with a lot of other cool ways to use this.

Yes, I completely endorse this, I was thinking about something similar the other day.
I would also like to see a drawback for this system; something along the lines of:
You assign the parts you want to be extendable to the Computer, then have to specify which direction it extends/retracts from. Then it checks if that part will actually extend into the ship, if not, you get an error.
The computer will then make a red box, like the docking computer on the opposite side (inside the ship) of the extendable part that takes the entire extendable area (for example, a wing of 4x2x1 would make a red box of 4x4x1, a landing gear of two blocks down would be 1x1x2, etc.). That box area would have to be filled with any Hull Element block, and not accept any other blocks inside that area.
Maybe, if possible, you could even map it to a specific key, for example, pressing \"G\" for your landing gear, etc.

Hmm, I had only thought of it for landing gear, but I like the other applications.
    +1 win :)

no need for a negative aspect
heres why, your are placing the blocks, they count towards mass (just like the open door block does) and only 1 block can occupy a space, essentially, you just choosing to not benifit from that blocks armor/solidity/existance at certain times.
If it works like doors and only becomes invisible and non-clipping, then this idea works great as is, great idea xiphon
1 suggestion, for now, try using the doors as landing gear, connecting the legs within the ship and running a connecting block to near your core that you can use to de/activate the gear. This method works for other things as well

Yeah, I\'ve used the door blocks in interesting ways which is what gave me the idea.
There shouldn\'t be a negative aspect since extra hull blocks add mass that comes with its own cost. There should probably be a warmup time based on the number of blocks being changed, so it takes longer to open/close giant bay doors, or deploy armor around a huge ship.
